Dear Victory Parents:

This letter is to inform you we have a Victory student with a severe peanut allergy so we are implementing a strategy to ensure a safe learning environment.  Strict avoidance of peanut products on school grounds is the only way to prevent a life threatening allergic reaction.

If the student eats or comes in contact with peanut, an allergic reaction will occur that requires emergency medical treatment and an injection of epinephrine.  This is a life-or-death situation.  If she gets peanut in her mouth, she has less than 10 minutes to receive emergency medical care.  Although not as severe, an allergic reaction can occur even if the student merely touches a table with peanut residue.

Parents and Students:

We are asking you to help by supporting Victory’s initiative for a peanut-free school

  • Food services works diligently to ensure all meals served are peanut-free.
  • “Cold Lunch” tables have been set up for students bringing lunch from home”.  This does not mean peanut is allowed on these tables.  The tables are to safeguard against food coming from home that may not be perfectly peanut free.  For example, the jam jar may have a skid of peanut butter in it and that jar was used for the jam sandwich.  Or a cookie may show up that was labeled “may contain peanuts”.
  • Students will be greeted each day with a quick squirt of hand sanitizer in case anyone had peanut butter as part of their breakfast.
  • Students will wash their hands after lunch and snacks
  • Snacks or treats for class parties or school events need to be peanut-free items (see back of sheet for a list of peanut-free snacks).  There are also fun ideas for “food free” parties!

Currently Victory has one student with a severe allergy to peanut.  She will not be the last.  Peanut allergic is becoming more prevalent.  Victory is paving the way with ingenuity to address the severity of this allergy and promote safety not only for this student, but for future ones as well.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.  Thank you.
